I was shooting an assignment for Texas Monthly magazine on the clowns of Ringland Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, and spent a week backstage two different times among all of them. Once in Houston Texas, and once in Buffalo, New York.
Since I've always been a clown at heart, I decided to fulfill my fantasy and become a clown while shooting their portraits. It turned out to be a good idea, because the clowns started to warm up to me and gave me poses I didn't have to ask for. I walked around backstage with a large soft box on a boom that had wheels, and rolled it around for three days,
If you look close at the images, you will see me taking a portrait while in costume. In the photograph of the three clowns standing in the walkway, I'm the clown positioned camera left; the one dressed in blue.
